Teased and coiffed bangs have been seen recently on the Spring 09 runway, and they’ll also make an appearance in the photo spreads in the October issues of W and Vogue feature models with glam versions of the rolled-bang pompadour. And we might just have a polygamist sect to thank for that.

Leave it to desigers to work in a shout out to fundamentalist Mormons after this sect found themselves in the headlines earlier this spring.

From Hollywood to the runways, the style is making its way into high fashion. Designer Zac Posen did a version of the bang on his models and actresses like Maggie Gyllenhaal and Cate Blanchett have been seen with their own versions.

The modernized looks aren’t exact takes on FLDS coifs, but the connection is still there. However, stylists in the “real world” are doubting that it will trickle down to the mainstream, and that they’ll be putting aside their trendy pink scissors in favor of creating even trendier, big, coiffed bangs.

“I wouldn’t see anyone saying, ‘Give me that exact look,’ unless they were going to a costume party,” says Janelle Schwab, a stylist at Dolce Salon and Spa in Chandle, AZ.

And one stylist ventures a suggestion as to why:  the backcombed bang is simply too time-consuming.

“It is a certain amount of work to do,” he says. “You need some sort of an engineering degree to get that much hair on top of the head and not fall down.”

Baltimore’s residents don’t mess around when it comes to hair- homeless people have even been known to comment on hair styles there! Of course, it’s no surprise, since Hairspray was set there. So it’s also no surprise that one of the best stylists, according to some, started out doing celeb hair in Vegas.

Originally from Baltimore, Sarah Cathcart spent a year styling celebrities and high rollers in Las Vegas, then moved herself and her pink scissors back to her city and opened her own salon, Crash. In July of 2005. Last year, Sarah became a mom, sold Crash, and now works at Zena’s Salon and Spa in Mt. Vernon, and while it can be tough to get an appointment with this most gifted of stylists, she always does her best to accommodate, and she is well worth the wait

“My favorite thing to do is a change,” she says. “Whether that means a new cut, color or both, I love a challenge. One of the things I like most about doing hair is seeing how even subtle differences can really change the way a person looks.”

You may wonder how people get their start in the business of being stylist to the stars. For Samuel L. Jacson’s hair stylist, it wasn’t something he set out to do. Robert Stevenson was a cook at a restaurant at LAX when he was drafted into the Army. When it came time for him to get out, he didn’t know what type of career he wanted, but a friend had an idea: open up a hair salon. The only problem was, Robertson had no idea about how to do hair!

“I thought it was cool, you see all the women and you say, oh hey, this is slick. But see I had never done hair and I had no clue. So when I got back, I took my G.I. and went to Flavio Beauty College in the Crenshaw area. What happened was, when I started training, I actually really started liking it. I was actually fairly good at it and just didn’t know it; it was kind of a gift that I never knew I had. After that… that was it, I knew that was going to be my career.

For the past thirteen years on 37 films, he has had the distinct honor of serving as the personal hairstylist for Samuel L. Jackson – and we’re guessing he hasn’t once lifted up a pink scissor in this line of work! His most recent film credits with Jackson include the upcoming films ‘Soul Men,’ ‘The Spirit‘ and ‘Lakeview Terrace.’

With a career that stretches back to the 70’s, Stevenson has accumulated many accolades. He has won numerous Emmy Awards and has been a voting member of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
